Genital Warts Symptoms
Genital Warts are caused by the infection with HPV most commonly with HPV-6 and HPV-11 which are responsible for over 90% of all genital warts infections, while infection with HPV-6 is about three times more frequent than with HPV-11. Genital warts can occur within months or even years after being infected with HPV, depending from person to person. They do not cause any pain but are very repulsive and highly upsetting for the infected persons.
Genital warts most frequently occur in the anogenital region: inside and outside the vagina or around the anus in women and on the tip of penis, scrotum or around the anus in men. If having oral sex with an infected person genital warts can also develop in the mouth or throat but such cases are very rare. Genital warts usually occur in clusters initially as pink-to-brown papules or nodules in size of a pin head but eventually they enlarge and spread - in some cases covering the entire genital area. Besides size and number which vary from person to person genital warts also have different shapes: filiform, pearl-like, like small heads of cauliflower, flat, giant. However, regardless to size and shapes genital warts are very disturbing and for that reason all having them are trying to remove them as soon as possible not only because of their upsetting appearance but also because genital warts are highly contagious. If left untreated genital warts may enlarge or remain the same and in some people even disappear on their own.
There are several different methods to remove genital warts but in 20 to 30% of cases they can reoccur for unknown reasons. Besides that removal of genital warts does not eliminate HPV infectivity and for that reason it is very important to practice safe sex even when genital warts disappear.
